You know its pretty sad when....
You look at an old picture and first thing you notice is the price of gasoline...
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...08-09_1621.jpg I took that photo one day when I got out of my car and saw the viper at a light. |
Wow...that's cheap gas.
It's $5.18/gallon (1.37¢/L) here. |
Keep in mind the photo is like 7 years old
|
Nearer $9 US Gallon here at the moment, with a tax hike due in the next few months.

It isn't the price of gasoline in the old pictures, it's more the complete lack of concern over availability, consequences, etc, that I remember (as one goes back a few more decades). America was once the land of "the new", the future be it infrastructure, options, people, what-have-you. An empire at imperial zenith we now know . . bu heady and intoxicaticating when one is young & impressionable. Cheap energy we could take for granted.
The Land of Happy Motoring as one commentator put it. Soon enough, PAN AM would take us on a glorious cruise in orbit. And humanity would someday fill the solar system. No ends. Old pictures make all of this more than bittersweet. Nostalgia for those flawed assumptions. Sic transit gloria . |
I read an old issue of Popular mechanics once, where they were predicting that in the future, people would bring their car with them on vacation on a plane!
