Zx2 Fan- Always running
1998 Ford Escort ZX2
I just realized it while working on my car today that my fan runs 24/7. I thought it was only when the defrost was on, but not it seems that it's always running. Start it up, and its on. Why is this happening? Normal? |
The only 2 positions where the fan doesn't come on are the dash vent and the floor/dash vent settings. A/c, floor/defrost and defrost all cause the rad fan to run. It could be a stuck relay, try pulling the 15 amp a/c fuse in the under dash fuse panel and see what happens. If that doesn't do it, try pulling the relay and test it with an ohm meter to see if the contacts are welded.

Ac is removed. But I tried removing the fuse...no dice. Fan still runs on high.
Which relay should I be testing? Are you talking about part of the ccrm? Shouldn't I be able to visually see a bad solder? |
1 Attachment(s)
Yes, it is part of the ccrm. Check the pins using the attached as a guide.

Relay was burnt out. Hopefully replacing it fixes it.

Tried to replace the relay. Pulling it out messed up the traces because of the way they glued it on. Fan just doesnt run now. Replacement relay apparently didnt do anything.
Found a replacement at a junkyard though, picking it up tomorrow along with a few other things like the splash guard a mechanic lost. |
Be sure the part number on the replacement CCRM is the same as the original, otherwise it will not work properly. I know there are at least 2 (maybe more) different CCRM part numbers for the ZX-2.
|
Just tried to different ccrms. One from an early 99 zx2 and one from a 98 escort. Car runs with it, so I'm sure its compatible (4 wire maf)
I'm going to double check this last one with a voltmeter. The fan does not run now. Ever. |
Fan runs on high with thermostat temp sensor disconnected. Never comes on with ac or defrost setting.
Does not get power with ac or defrost setting at the fan. So the fan should be fine. |

Unless I am mistaken they changed the CCRM model number on the ZX-2 sometime in the middle of the '98 year model, so one from a late model '98 is probably the same as '99 up, but an early model '98 is different. On the regular Escort one from a '97 will not work on anything '98 and up. I have also seen 3 or 4 different part numbers used on '98 up and I have also compared the circuitry in some of them (opened up side by side) and they were different. |
