Fill date Distance Fill amount Price MPG Details
2009-11-03 344.8 mi. 8.401 US gal $2.939 41.04 US Avg speed 38 mph. One commute leg, no lean burn.
2009-10-30 365 mi. 8.567 US gal $2 42.61 US Avg speed 40 MPH
2009-10-26 398.2 mi. 9.529 US gal 41.79 US avg. speed 40 mph
2009-10-21 360.2 mi. 8.393 US gal $2.869 42.92 US Avg speed 39 mph.
2009-10-16 348.5 mi. 8.351 US gal $2.819 41.73 US 46 avg. mph. Two trips in cold rainy weather. One of those it locked itself out of Lean Burn and since car pooling I needed good heat and defrost, never got into LB the whole trip. Mid way through tank I pumped up the tires; they'd lost at least 10 lb. since last checked. Now at 52 psi cold so that's good.
2009-10-12 412.6 mi. 9.678 US gal $2.679 42.63 US 41 avg. MPH included some rainy weather.
2009-10-07 375.6 mi. 8.981 US gal $2.639 41.82 US Some rain on at least two commute legs. Weather has been getting cooler too.
2009-10-01 189.3 mi. 4.558 US gal $2.699 41.53 US Avg MPH: 37. New left front axle installed about 70 mi. prior to fill.
2009-09-29 455 mi. 10.69 US gal $2.739 42.56 US Avg MPH: 39.
2009-09-22 418.9 mi. 9.2 US gal $2.839 45.53 US East Htfd, Tues. after the NY road trip wtih Jackie. I drove all. 41.6 av. MPH, SG changed to -10.9%.
2009-09-18 343.4 mi. 7.546 US gal 45.51 US SG adjust at -9.8%. This was Friday before the NY Yom Kippur road trip.
2009-09-15 376.8 mi. 8.659 US gal $2.879 43.52 US First tank in a long time with no ScanGauge failure. Prior tank's avg MPH recorded by noting current data periodically before testing horn etc. to generate SG failure. So I had the time and distance to get mph data
2009-09-09 375.3 mi. 8.515 US gal $2.959 44.08 US avg 39.6 mph. During this tank, tamed the rebooting ScanGauge by installing horn relay and not using headlight high/low switch. Headlight relays were installed following this fill.
2009-09-01 476.6 mi. 11.25 US gal 42.36 US The Civic had a couple weeks off while it was at Justin's getting the windshield replaced and rust cleaned out. Drove the blue Volvo in the meantime.
2009-08-12 280.3 mi. 6.798 US gal 41.23 US Avg spd 37 mph. Some heavy a/c use in this tank.
2009-08-07 134.7 mi. 2.911 US gal $2.939 46.27 US 89 octane Shell, E. Htfd station. Two commute legs, an errand to Mystic, plus an extra highway run, warm, of about 30 miles. ScanGauge correction now at -10.9 pct.
2009-08-06 146.5 mi. 3.642 US gal $3.079 40.23 US 93 octane Shell, E. Htfd. station. The 3.6 gal diluted into the rest of the tank hopefully gave a net mix of about 89 octane which is what I expect to feed it. 87 octane gave persistent ping/knock no matter what I did, till ultimately I retarded the timing till there was NO get-up-and-go. That happened in this fill, which also had a lot of heavy a/c usage.
2009-08-04 208.9 mi. 4.975 US gal $2.799 41.99 US 87 octane Shell, E. Htfd.
2009-07-30 522.4 mi. 11.87 US gal 44.01 US E. Htfd. Main St. fills about .5 gal less than the Rt. 85 station. - - Entry is a fill plus 2 mini-fills. 8.382 + 3.252 + 0.240 = 11.874 gal. Tested the clickoff points of Rte 85 Wtfd station vs. Main Set. E Htfd. At Main E. Htfd it should have taken about .75-.85 gal. but took only 0.24. So Main St. is filling about .5 gal less than the Rt. 85 station.
2009-07-23 421.2 mi. 9.905 US gal 42.52 US This fill was at Mystic Shell, Rt. 72/I-95. Lots of rain with defrost, and a/c for Frank P.
2009-07-17 256.4 mi. 5.396 US gal 47.52 US
2009-07-15 406.1 mi. 9.331 US gal 43.52 US
2009-07-10 137.5 mi. 3.197 US gal 43.01 US
2009-07-09 304.5 mi. 6.658 US gal 45.73 US Ign. timing was still in flux for this tank but close to final setting.
2009-07-06 359 mi. 8.37 US gal 42.89 US
2009-07-02 137.5 mi. 3.197 US gal 43.01 US filled for a fresh start due to ScanGauge memory failure. It did it again about 30 miles into the new tank started here.
2009-07-02 409.8 mi. 9.551 US gal 42.91 US Included some heavy a/c, running constantly to suit carpool buddy.
2009-06-26 203.3 mi. 3.938 US gal 51.63 US Filled after getting ScanGauge back from repair. I want a fresh tank to judge SG performance.
2009-06-25 406.2 mi. 9.006 US gal 45.1 US
2009-06-22 522.6 mi. 12.05 US gal 43.37 US Two mini fills of about a gallon each when tank was very low, followed by one real fillup, for a total of 12.05 gal. Minis were done to dilute the fuel injector cleaner remaining in the very low tank. So following the final fill of about 10 gal. there was essentially no cleaner left in the tank.
2009-06-16 280.9 mi. 6.919 US gal 40.6 US Filled immediately after Firestone/Bridgestone fuel injector and valve/upper cylinder cleaning. Done to dilute to proper concentration the injector cleaner that had been added to tank. Shell gas, paid cash. Cleaning process idled it for 30-40 minutes or so which hurt the overall FE.
2009-06-12 494.7 mi. 10.38 US gal 47.66 US
2009-06-08 369.6 mi. 8.096 US gal 45.65 US 89 octane, ~40 miles after replacement of cat-back exhaust system.
2009-06-05 323.9 mi. 7.516 US gal 43.09 US This tank entirely driven with full grill block over upper grill. That went on part way through the previous tank (installed Memorial Day weekend).
2009-06-01 162.5 mi. 3.365 US gal $2.879 48.29 US 93 octane. Blended into tank would make about 88.5 or 89 octane. Jackie kept hearing knock so I promised I'd use 89 octane. Set SG adj. back to about -10.x % following this fillup. First trip back home was via Rte 9 on a hot day, hardly any LB on Rte 9. Soon as I got to 95 in O.S. it was able to LB again. Hills + heat I think = no LB.
2009-05-29 163.1 mi. 3.709 US gal $2.599 43.97 US
2009-05-28 410 mi. 9.219 US gal 44.47 US SG adj. set at -10.6% after this fill
2009-05-21 54.8 mi. 1.283 US gal $2.599 42.71 US Filled in a.m. in E. Htfd. Drove home from work with Peter, lots of engine off coast. ScanGauge showed 55 mpg. However nearly no Lean Burn on that commute leg so the ~43 mpg I achieved makes sense vs. the 55 on the adjusted SG. Short tank too, so it would have read 46.3 mpg if pump handle had clicked off .1 gal. earlier.
2009-05-21 293.6 mi. 6.509 US gal $2.499 45.11 US Shell gas. Half way through this tank I did a Seafoam treatment. Seems to have handled the ping. Now I only hear a sewing machine type noise, maybe valves.
2009-05-16 404.8 mi. 9.088 US gal $2.399 44.54 US Apparently ironed out most bugs re. maintaining Lean Burn. Still goes out in damp conditions but oh well. Seems to get high mpg on the SG at those times so I think advance is increased and LB is disabled. If so, "it's all good".
2009-05-11 432 mi. 10.27 US gal $2.319 42.06 US Overfilled - spilled a bit. Maybe .1 or .2 gallons? SOrry!
2009-05-05 376.1 mi. 9.09 US gal 41.38 US Had some issues maintaining LB. Finally settled on full grill block on left side, and right side fully blocked in the upper area only. For very cool am's maybe an extra blocking chunk on the right side.
2009-04-27 363.6 mi. 7.482 US gal $2.199 48.6 US On I-95 coming home from Port Washington NY.
2009-04-25 290.6 mi. 6.165 US gal $2.029 47.14 US In Mass. outside Boston; 87 octane. Had a tailwind going up to Boston. Headwind going back down; that's on the tank following this fillup.
2009-04-22 368.5 mi. 8.98 US gal $2.159 41.04 US Previous fillup in NJ done by station service person, was 89 octane. This fillup 87 octane.
2009-04-18 431.8 mi. 9.965 US gal $2.079 43.33 US 89 octane in NJ on the way home from Phia. trip. Car had approx 30 mi. on the tank before we left and got out of PA before we needed gas. Jackie heard pinging which is why we got 89 octane. My theory was that ping was caused by hot intake air so I restored the oem configuration.
2009-04-15 390.3 mi. 9.508 US gal 41.05 US
2009-04-08 288.3 mi. 7.056 US gal $2.159 40.86 US Shell gas in Bronx on the way to Port Washington for Passover.
2009-04-05 336.8 mi. 8.698 US gal $2.159 38.72 US I-95 rest stop fillup. Tank had shorter trips due to not working. Had more lean burn due to better weather and ?? Net mpg not so great - 38.72 mpg.
2009-03-23 201.2 mi. 5.328 US gal $1.999 37.76 US East Hartford 66 station. 39 mph. Avg.
2009-03-19 361.3 mi. 8.459 US gal $1.659 42.71 US 66 gas station in E. Htfd.
2009-03-16 165 mi. 4.8 US gal $1.979 34.38 US Jackie and Mike drove to Avon (Htfd) and back.
2009-03-13 317.6 mi. 8.329 US gal 38.13 US Avg. speed tank, 46 mph. 2.5 legs (total 150 miles) with essentially no lean burn.

My theory is - it's due to the Shell gas I was buying, nitrogen-enriched. Messing up the HX's 3-way cat converter that processes NOx. No more Shell gas for me - let's see if that fixes it.

I had the engine temp up over 180 deg. F and intake temps were around 70-80 also. No issues there.
2009-03-10 166.9 mi. 4.057 US gal $2.039 41.14 US Lots of lean burn, thanks to the new HAI that I set up on 3/7/09.
2009-03-07 357.9 mi. 8.74 US gal $2.159 40.95 US warmer weather = more Lean Burn. Tank did include a couple legs without LB though, if I recall.
2009-03-02 222 mi. 6.226 US gal $1.999 35.66 US Filled up at Rt. 395 Mobil. Had a difficult tank. One or maybe even two check engine lights. Then one commute leg on snowy roads without lean burn, and the trip back on clean wet roads, again no lean burn.
2009-02-27 324.1 mi. 7.713 US gal $1.969 42.02 US Filled at E. Htfd. Shell, Main St. Warmer weather means more time in Lean Burn mode. If roads are wet, 32ºF seems to be the switching point. I've seen misting conditions around 32-40º where lean burn was limited to TPS mid 20's, not up to TPS 32º as with dry roads.
2009-02-21 65.7 mi. 1.948 US gal $2.069 33.73 US ScanGauge failed twice: it reset mileage to zero. This entry is two small fillups I did, with a reset of tank clock to zero. First time, I spotted it and topped off within a couple miles to restart the tank counter. Second time, spotted immediately and topped off within about .4 miles. Both 'tanks' were full of short trips, one with heater running max heat.
2009-02-20 307.6 mi. 7.945 US gal $2.099 38.72 US Interesting: Rarely would achieve lean burn this a.m. Then I reinstalled the grill block chunk I'd removed the previous afternoon due to running hot (192 or 197ºF). With grill block restored (right side of car), it went right into LB and stayed there. My theory is that the intake air warmed up as a result of restored block.
2009-02-18 288.3 mi. 7.354 US gal $2.039 39.2 US Some lean burn but not consistent.
2009-02-12 147.1 mi. 3.824 US gal $2.079 38.47 US Avg speed 45 mph. This was essentially all highway; I was surprised the avg wasn't about 60. My first time noting avg tank speed. High percentage lean burn. Maybe 60-70%? ScanGauge messed up during this tank. Fortunately it was two small fills combined; I only lost the gauge data from the first mini-fill.
2009-02-11 182 mi. 4.605 US gal $2.159 39.52 US
2009-02-07 73.9 mi. 2.23 US gal $2.019 33.14 US Filled after setting up ScanGauge just received back from warranty repair. Hose spilled fuel. Actual sold amount was 2.37 gal.
2009-02-06 326.2 mi. 7.919 US gal $1.999 41.19 US All dry roads, as I recall. Must have been in LB a lot for this tank. No ScanGauge. It arrived back from warranty svce ~60 mi. after this fill.
2009-02-01 268.2 mi. 7.339 US gal 36.54 US Removed ScanGauge for warranty repair shortly before fill. Reason: most tanks suffered a data corruption whereby the full tank distance, gallons and mpg were not available at fill time. Display labels such as "MPG" or dFE would also corrupt and show some characters incorrectly. See photobucket album http://s188.photobucket.com/albums/z11/brucepick/ScanGauge%20Corrupted%20Dec%2023/ and similar for Dec. 30, 2008.
2009-01-27 305.5 mi. 7.859 US gal $1.899 38.87 US Cold dry weather has enabled lean burn. It goes into LB fairly easily and tends to stay there. Note this is after a recent multiple oil change. Not sure if that has something to do with it.
2009-01-22 299.2 mi. 7.971 US gal $1.919 37.54 US One very short fill (.704 gal) combined with a regular fill. Had a check engine light - the old Cat converter code. Oil level was at half mark when I checked; my theory is oil burning fouled the cat. Just before the CEL it went out of lean burn and stayed. After that, after 1.5 commute trips, it went into LB no problem.
2009-01-19 245 mi. 6.261 US gal $1.919 39.13 US While driving this tank I had a Gunk motor flush/change followed by a rinse oil change and then trans fluid change. Flush + rinse used about 15 min. idling time. Virtually no Lean Burn.
2009-01-15 227.2 mi. 6.273 US gal 36.22 US Very little lean burn. Very cold outside temps: about 0 deg. F. in a.m., max about 15-17 deg. F. in daytime.
2009-01-14 124.7 mi. 3.266 US gal 38.18 US All highway miles. Bad headwind going to work.
2009-01-12 330.6 mi. 8.61 US gal 38.4 US Included short local trips in rotten winter snowy conditions.
2009-01-06 93.2 mi. 1.903 US gal $1.719 48.98 US ~80-90% Lean Burn. ScanGauge predicted 2.5 gal.; it took 1.903 gal for 93.2 miles. Lean Burn gave an INCREASE of 31.4% over the SG's predicted mpg.
2009-01-04 295.5 mi. 7.87 US gal $1.899 37.55 US
2008-12-24 357.3 mi. 9.873 US gal $1.769 36.19 US
2008-12-18 336.3 mi. 7.463 US gal $1.859 45.06 US
2008-12-16 184.8 mi. 4.686 US gal $1.799 39.44 US
2008-12-12 142.8 mi. 3.475 US gal $1.799 41.09 US
2008-12-12 91 mi. 2.472 US gal 36.81 US Dry cool weather, could only get about 20% lean burn time. Dunno why.
2008-12-11 326.9 mi. 7.391 US gal $1.799 44.23 US
2008-12-04 431.3 mi. 9.843 US gal $1.899 43.82 US Actually 9.268 + .575 gal later because I forgot to zero the trip odometer. Normally I wouldn't go that long before a fillup.
2008-11-30 73.5 mi. 1.675 US gal 43.88 US
2008-11-30 209 mi. 5.653 US gal 36.97 US
2008-11-25 301.2 mi. 7.861 US gal $1.999 38.32 US
2008-11-20 294.7 mi. 6.967 US gal $2.159 42.3 US
2008-11-17 232.7 mi. 6.091 US gal $2.199 38.2 US
2008-11-14 146.9 mi. 3.501 US gal $2.259 41.96 US
2008-11-12 320.9 mi. 8.482 US gal $2.299 37.83 US Scangauge arrived Monday 11/10. Not sure when installed. I think some time that week.
2008-11-09 199.9 mi. 8.724 US gal 22.91 US
2008-10-28 360.9 mi. 8.584 US gal $2.579 42.04 US Half way thru the tank the r.r. brake was scraping badly. Two or three legs done in serious rain. Rainy trip to N.H. to see ENT Dr. Kveton with rotten rear brake.
2008-10-24 236.5 mi. 5.778 US gal $2.999 40.93 US
2008-10-22 152.7 mi. 3.956 US gal $3.079 38.6 US two short fillups combined. Lots of errands etc.
2008-10-20 103.3 mi. 2.444 US gal $2.999 42.27 US two short fillups combined
2008-10-19 45.6 mi. 1.019 US gal $3.099 44.75 US Weekend stuff - trips to Groton + New London/Wtfd. Full EOC P&G. To see what I could do with that. Next is to fill up after each commute leg to test techniques.
2008-10-17 397.8 mi. 9.467 US gal $2.939 42.02 US
2008-10-10 109.9 mi. 2.548 US gal $3.399 43.13 US Did lots of true Pulse & Glide with engine off for the coast portions. Pretty decent results considering these two commute legs included pickup + dropoff of my car pool buddy. But I did expect better.
2008-10-09 172 mi. 4.004 US gal $3.399 42.96 US Three commute legs plus two rehearsals. Two legs using true P&G with engine off coasts. One of those two, had the trunk open! Blame that on craziness from the home renovation fixit project.
2008-10-08 353.9 mi. 8.546 US gal $3.459 41.41 US Return trip from NY, to/from work with Frank P. (fast), then back up again Wed. and fillup in a.m. in E. Hartford. After fillup I topped up the tire psi, should now be about 44/42 cold, front/rear.
2008-10-06 135.9 mi. 2.539 US gal $3.699 53.53 US Trip to NY with Mike in car. He drove about 1/2 hour, did OK. Apparently the computer figured itself out by this time as mpg was very nice.
2008-10-05 127.5 mi. 3.844 US gal $3.599 33.17 US Dunno why such low mpg. Entire "tank" was on new t'stat. Possibly the computer was still figuring things out.
2008-10-03 109.4 mi. 2.098 US gal $3.679 52.14 US This 'tank' after noting that temp gauge was dipping seriously on coasting etc. This tank included minimal coasting in a futile effort to keep the engine temp up. Remedied just before this fillup by changing out the thermostat. Next tank is on new t'stat and new tires.
2008-10-02 48.5 mi. 1.17 US gal $3.659 41.45 US
2008-10-02 386.1 mi. 9.464 US gal $3.659 40.8 US Fillup after three or four days commuting.
2008-09-28 137.2 mi. 2.579 US gal 53.2 US Trip home from N.H. after picking up Civic HX.
