Battery died, wiping out the details of this tank. Battery probably died because of the amount of cranking I had to do after I replaced the seals of the injection pump. Took a while for the fuel to reach the cylinders.

Wife filled up, so the fillup was probably not as consistent as the times when I filled up.

Helga was down for ~2 months as I replaced the injection pump seals and the front wheel bearing. This was the first fillup after she got on the road. HPR Diesel does seem to give a much smoother idle as soon as the car starts.

I think as a result of replacing the seals, the IP is out of adjustment... that's why the SG values are so different from actuals.

Had a first fill with HPR last time, and discovered at this fill that my Injection Pump seals started to leak... not just a little, but a lot! Doing some reading, discovered that biodiesel will swell the seals while ULSD will shrink them... since HPR is very similar to ULSD, I'm guessing that was the cause. So Helga is down until I can get the seals replaced. <Argh!>

Wow! Over two months since the last fillup!!

This tank was primarily commuting, with a fairly even mix of driving between my wife & I... maybe driven a little more by me. The starter died on it during this tank, so there were a couple of weeks that only I drove it, and not very often at that (my wife doesn't like bump-starting on her own). More moderate temperatures allowed for less AC while still being favorably warm for FE.

Since I had to disconnect the battery for replacing the starter (which resets the trip odo on the car), went with the SG miles since last fill.

Sadly, a low FE tank. I was out of commission for a couple of weeks, so my wife drove most of this tank. Along with her typically lower FE, conditions were not favorable, with abnormally high temperatures (requiring nearly constant AC, especially since my wife was driving). Coupled with nearly all errands (no long trips on this tank), the tank FE was relatively poor.

This tank included several trips to the Bay Area (~290 miles round trip each). Typically, the trips out to the Bay Area resulted in high (~70mpg, according to ScanGauge) FE figures, but the return trip included a lot of stop&go traffic so return FE wasn't as good as it could have been. Still, even the return trips were ~64mpg, helping boost the tank FE.

Rest of the tank included the typical errands, where getting high FE is difficult.

After the trip to St. Louis, the tires (Bridgestone Ecopia EP100s) were clearly 'done' (45,000 miles; tires were spec'd for 50,000). Also, it was obvious that the alignment was off as the tires were worn unevenly just in the (relatively) short drive out there and back. So during this tank, I replaced the tires (Bridgestone Ecopia EP422s) and then had an alignment done.

Early part of the tank was mostly errand-running and several trips into the office (e.g. commuting). Took a few longer trips to the Bay Area toward the end of this tank; thought I'd have a much higher tank FE, but I think I might have under-filled the last tank a little (thereby yielding a fairly high FE value) and then over-filled this tank (thereby yielding a fairly low FE value). Guess I need to come up with a way to be more consistent!

Scangauge was off, possibly as a result of going from pure dino-diesel to mostly B20.

Mostly the remainder of the trip from St. Louis back home. The majority of the trip was on the freeway and with climbing (over the Sierra Nevadas) up to 7,190ft and then descending into the Sacramento Valley. Decided to fill at the half tank so I could get an FE number that is nearly all related to the trip and doesn't have a bunch of errand-running mixed in.

Second half of drive to St Louis. First part of the tank was looking really good; up to 68mpg according to the Scangauge. But then the high winds across the plains of Kansas and the rolling hills in Missouri (which I was too tired to take advantage of) knocked the FE down. Discovered on this tank that discrepancy between odo miles and gps miles is ~+5% (gps shows more miles traveled than odo). This means I'm getting about 5% better FE than I thought (at least that's what I think it means!). I've set the Scangauge to show miles according to the GPS, but will still use odo miles for the fuel log.

This tank was purely commuting, with my wife driving most of the miles.

This tank primarily consisted of long drives on the freeway at ~60mph, which got me between 60 and 70mpg avg (68mpg for 280 miles and 63mpg for 190 miles, according to the Scangauge, for example). Still have some relatively easy aeromods that I can do (and will try to do) before the next long trip scheduled toward the end of April.

A few more long freeway drives on this tank, plus I did most of the driving this time. Also the second tank over 900 miles!! Pretty awesome!

Added a skid plate and a coolant preheater about mid way through this tank. Both helped FE noticeably (though I don't use the coolant preheater every single morning... When I do, I use it for ~30 min before leaving)

Primarily the return trip from Spokane. Was able to do the full trip on a single tank of fuel. No special hypermiling being done throughout the trip. Mainly stayed at or below the posted speed limit. Grill was blocked at the top, and also blocked most of the driver's side grill (not used for cooling at all) and half of the passenger's side grill (partly used for intercooler). Decent weather nearly the entire trip; just had some rain at the beginning.

Filled up partial then full tank in one day... hence the odd price per gallon.

This tank included 2 long trips to San Francisco and back and one to Davis and back... overall tank FE is likely lower due to those trips.

Near the beginning of the tank, replaced injector nozzles and received a tune; additionally replaced the thermostat. Water temp is noticeably higher (more in the 'normal' range rather than under temp) as a result. Scangauge is a bit off due to the new nozzles, but even so there was a definite freeway FE improvement.

Since the new tune is quite fun, probably lost a few FE points "testing out" the newfound performance...

Primarily commuting for this tank; filled up early due to a long trip the next morning.

Removed the mud flaps and folded in the passenger mirror; both those actions seemed to help bring my daily commute FE to over 60MPG. The grill block is probably helping too, though it's not sufficient to keep the water temp in the proper range... will be replacing the thermostat this coming weekend in hopes of correcting that issue as well.

Was hoping that I would not need to fill up in February! Ah well...

Had a few longer freeway trips on this tank. Freeway driving really brings the tank FE down. First tank under 800 miles! I could have easily made it to 800, but I haven't gotten the Scangauge dialed in yet (though the Scangauge gallons used was much closer than I expected this tank).

For the commuting miles, continued to take the surface route to work and back, which helped raise the overall FE significantly. Frustrated that the freeway FE drops so much compared to surface FE.

Also, temperatures were quite a bit lower for a portion of February, which I'm sure did not help FE very much.

Last weekend, added upper and lower grill block, and while it might have helped keep the temps up a little bit, it's still not enough... really need to get a lower engine cover in place, and will consider getting an upper one as well (which covers the entire engine compartment).

Impressed with what I could do with no mods except tires! Working on some grill blocks now; noticing that the coolant temp rarely gets above 175 deg F (and often drops into the 160 deg range), which is probably not helping.

Second tank on the Jetta.

Mostly commuting. Taking surface roads for the commuting, which gives me a round trip fe average of 55 to 60mpg.

Had a few longer trips which required freeway. Freeway fe is closer to 30mpg.

Using ScanGauge II, which is helping to tune my driving style with the TDI. Pulse & Glide (with engine on) works very well. I don't do Engine Off primarily because of the power steering... if I am trying to turn (even slightly) with engine off and then start the engine, the kick of the power steering unit really causes the steering to 'over turn' which is a little scary.

No fe mods other than the LRR tires set to 50psi.

First full tank fillup on Helga. Filling up with B5 and then adding a few ounces of diesel additive for lubricity and to keep water from separating.

This tank included two days of fairly long trips via freeway, which dropped avg fe down to high 30's; typical commute is ~60mpg round trip.

Only mod currently is LRR tires inflated to ~50psi.
