Since towing my truck to College Station, I towed a 6x12 trailer (hatch up, 33% grill block, empty trailer) back to Houston fer a load up. MPGs hit an all time low...an indicated 13.5mpg. At least I got 16.6mpg coming back up with the trailer and truck fully loaded. Didn't git a chance to do my measurements as I was pretty tired from all the driving and loading.

Finally got my final two runs with a 6x12 trailer in last night. All runs with the hatch in the up position, 33% upper grill block, rear wheel skirts removed, standard bed load of 250lbs (tools). Speed set to 60mph fer the first one and 55mph fer the last one. No measurements of tongue weight, rear end drop, or trailer weight was observed.

Run #1 at 60mph yielded an indicated 15.1mpg with an empty trailer, day drive right before rush hour traffic from College Station to Houston, some stop and go traffic near Houston, light rain. Return trip with a fully loaded trailer yielded an indicated 15.9mpg, night drive after evening rush hour traffic from Houston to College Station, light rain. Actual mileage after refueling yielded 16.1mpg.

Run #2 at 55mph yielded an indicated 17.3mpg with an empty trailer, night drive from College Station to Houston, clear skies. Return trip with a lightly loaded trailer (about 300lbs of cargo) yielded an indicated 18.1mpg. After I return the trailer and refuel, I'll post the final mpg numbers.

I'm finding it interesting that as I travel up to higher elevation, my mileage seems to be better than traveling down to lower elevation. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

The actual mileage fer the last run was 18.12mpg. Not bad towing a 6x12 trailer with a gas powered V6 truck gitting close to 400,000 miles on it.

interesting that

From the trips out west through the mountains it turns out that I'm picking up up to 12% better economy due to the density altitude effects.
Since I'm never asking for any where near full power,it's easy for the EFI to maintain whatever air/fuel ratio it's looking for without going rich.
The thinner air cuts the drag down as if the Cd were actually lower than it is.
I do pay a penalty with grades but once into a relatively level stretch she cruises effortlessly.
The 6th-gear would be helpful.
You're rig may be experiencing a similar effect.
Nice numbers for a gas-burner!

...and my final tow fer this move. My car!



Yeah...I know the back end is waaaay too low. I should've brought the adjustable hitch but I couldn't find it in the garage after I unloaded the last load. At least I arrived safely...

Got an indicated 23.8mpg (65mph) going back to Houston with my standard aerocap configuration. Put the hatch up when I got the car carrier and got an indicated 15.7mpg towing (55mph). Not too bad I guess.

Made a day run into Houston towing a 5'x8' enclosed trailer. Installed the rear wheel skirts, opened up the lower grill block openings fer the dual transmission coolers, 33% upper grill block, and raised the hatch up on this run...indicated (empty) to Houston was 18.5mpg and 17.5mpg (loaded with ~200lbs). Actual total mileage was 17.98mpg. Speed set to 60mph. Moderate traffic coming back. No passengers this time.
