83mpg Festiva- in your dreams

RE: Top Ten List. I mean, I hope you or somebody does that someday, but you didn't do it yet. Read up on the inaccuracies of recording small fills please.

OK, this guy is a bit extreme (0.75 gallons!!), but he's not the only one to be recording small fills.

What gets up my nose is, some then using that inaccurate data to justify percentage increases for various (unicorn) mods.

It can be frustrating waiting for a full tank to be used (or even a half tank), for those of us who have no instantaneous FE display, but that's the only way you'll get half decent data.

Being patient is nearly driving me nuts while I wait for my next fill at the moment, but because I want believable results, I have to. :snail:

I couldn't be arsed into going to the gas station to but a gallon in to log some absurd mileage in my log, and I have a gas station about a mile from my house that's down hill all the way.

My latest fill was only 0.99 gallon :o

If I want to see what's possible without DPF regeneration, it's got to be a short fill anyway.

i remember when i made the top ten list! Ahhhh good times!

Just filling up itself is inaccurate. when I record mileage, I put the mileage down, and the gasoline I just put it. That isn't necessarily what I burned on the last tank, its what I put back to replace it. Iv seen my car take 10 to well over 13 gallons from empty (light on) depending on the pump, and the person putting it in. I rescued my G/F with my car, and had to let her use it for a few days, and my fill-up error was insane. My last 4 entries were (MPG) 26.20, 38.38, 21.27! and 42.49!! It all averages out, but you need a few consistent fill ups in a row to set a trend. One optimum trip is great @ that mileage, but its averages over time that will impress the most.

This is true. And the best advice I received on this site to mitigate the pump error problem is always refuel when the tank is as close to empty as practical, always use the same pump, always fill at the slowest rate-setting on the handle, always stop filling on the first click. I also always adjust my UG calibration at each fill, as needed. Because it is generally only a quart or less off relative to the pump, I know if something really weird has happened.

Now, if you live in a state like NJ, where self-serve is not legal, then you have some bigger challenges for the above method. You could probably tell the attendant to please not fill past the first click.

Those are pretty big differences, I wouldn't blame fueling inaccuracy for them if you put more than 2 gallons in.

I'm not too crazy about getting my fillups to be 100% consistent. I generally fill when the gauge is between 1/2 and 1/4 tank, which is about 8-9 gallons. I'll probably start filling to where I can see it when I start adding mods.

wow, that's a huge difference. i fill when i have about 1/3 of a tank left and my results are all within about 34-37mpg

Best I ever got with my stock festiva was 53 mpg cruising across Michigan behind a semi. I've heard of some others pushing 60 mpg cruising at like 45 mph...
