Fog light covers on an 06 Canyon

Just got another PM wanting to know how I did the fog light covers on my 06 Canyon. Photos are in my profile. Since the subject seems to be of general interest, here goes.

The fog light covers were inspired by an experience driving in heavy snowfall where the snow came down so fast that it filled the fog light holes, making the fogs unuseable. Any aerodynamic gains are small, but very welcome.

The Colorado/Canyon fog lights have a gap around them. That gap needs to be sealed before installing covers, or the area will be filled with dirt and salt glop thrown forward by the front tires. I sealed the gap with foam in a can, trimmed the bulging excess with a razor blade, and painted the foam surface black with a small paintbrush.

Start by making a template from a piece of cereal box or similar heavy paper. Cut a piece of acrylic (plexiglas) to fit the opening. This plastic is cheap and readily available (most hardware stores stock it), but very brittle. Saw very carefully with a new sharp fine tooth blade. Rough form to shape using a heat gun in one hand and a leather glove on the other hand.

Fasten the plastic in place using 3M body molding double stick tape (from auto parts store). Fine fit it by heating with a heat gun and pushing with a finger. A leather glove is needed. Be careful to direct the hot air on the plastic and away from the bumper fascia. When it fits all around, seal the edge with silicone sealant. Done.

Hey JR, I know I'm bringing up an old thread, but I thought it'd be more useful to others than a PM.

Any pics of the backside of the fog lights (the gap where you put foam in a can)?

If you do, I'm curious how that came out. I've never used the stuff before. No trouble if you didn't take any shots from that angle.

I don't have any pictures of the backside, mostly because you can't see much. The fog light has overlapping parts that hide the gaps and make it impossible to foam from the rear.

I foamed it from the front. Poke the foam tube in between the bumper fascia and the fog light lens, and foam away. Trim to fit, paint to hide, done.

Ok, I can picture that now. Sounds simple enough.

Does this mod impact the ease of changing the bulbs?

It does not affect changing the light bulb. Unplug the wire connector, twist, and remove.
