Turtle Transmission Swap Mercedes to GM

I have an 83' 300 SD Mercedes. I'm interested in converting the existing trans to a 700R4. I read the article posted from the guy in Toronto with the Suburban. This would be the same engine ( 5 cyl. diesel). Does anyone have information on this tranny swap?

The kit is made by Bendtsen's Transmission Center. You'll need a th700r4 that came out of a camaro or S-10(2.8L or 3.1L). The 700r4 that are hooked to 4.3-5.0-5.7liter engines have a different bell housing pattern.

Mercedes to GM tranny swap

Thankyou for the information. I am aware of the kit you refer to. I was however, unable to find out from any other sources, other than the manufacturer how this combination performs. Do you know anyone who has actually installed this kit in a Mercedes? It is a considerble amount of money to invest in something that might be experimental. I don't want to be the first to find out. It appears to be a simple changover. The only real issue is the torque converter. This is something that was engineered by this manufacturer and I'm sure he won't give any specific information on this. The other concern is how the starter is mounted.....which is included in this kit.

Thanks again, Ray

I don't know anyone who has done that conversion, I guess you'll have to keep checking the web, or a M-B club might help. That company makes alot of tranny adapters, looks like alot of engineering went into it. Alot of companys sell kits & in fine print it says universal kit, some fabracation req....

Not likely. Most MB enthusiasts will foam at the mouth at the hint of messing with MB's "perfect" engineering!

As for me, getting a different tranny in my 300td might get it moved out of the driveway where it's been sitting for six months -- thanks for the info, folks!
