ways to tell a original vx?

Im looking to trade in my b18 swapped crx tomorrow for a 92 civic vx. My question is what could I look at to tell if its a real vx? I have a pic of the engine but cant upload it right now. The valve cover doesnt have vtec-e on it and ive seen some that have it. It just says honda on it with the oil cap in the top right corner. Any info will help. Thanks and new to the whole hypermiling thing. Kinda hard to do it in a swapped car. Lol. Been working on p&g though. Get a little over 30 with the swap and some new 205/50r15 neo gens. Not the best for coasting. Thanks in advance.

Vin number should start with 2HGEH I believe. I'm going off the top of my head on that so I could be wrong.

Not all years had "V-tec" stamped on the valve cover, I think '92 was one of those years, oil fill on the V-tec valve cover is back drivers side corner, non V-tec is passenger side front of valve cover.



This looks to be a stock VX engine that I found a photo of online, O2 sensor is a 5 wire (except CA sold VX's that have a 4 wire o2 sensor) o2 sensor is right under the dip stick I think that the o2 sensor placement and catalytic converter placement right under the o2 sensor are only found on the VX, the VX also has a small air intake compared to some of the higher HP engines, there is also the engine code number stamped on the block, D15Z1 right under the upper radiator hose on the engine block.



This is what you want to avoid, header or other over sized exhaust and crazy huge air intake both are hard on the engine and will kill your mileage while causing weird vibrations and increased wear.

What Ryland said. Easiest things to spot are the 5 wire O2 sensor, and if you are in the car look for the upshift light when you are driving it. If it has both of those, then it's the real deal, or a fake that someone put WAY too much effort into lol.

My fault for not placing the year. It is a 92 so thats good on the valve cover. Its had some things done to it like a ram intake, header, exhaust, fuel rail, etc. Nothing internal though. Im thinking about going through with it as ive seen no other vxs around here. Then I will just replace things as needed to get back to stock.

Also look for egr box on the center of the firewall.

From what I've seen, non stock exhaust systems are hard on the o2 sensor and a new o2 sensor can cost $200 or more for a Civic VX, also some people keep the stock parts around, so ask the person selling it if they have stock parts that they removed that can come with the car.

Its been through a few owners so he probably doesnt have the stock parts. I think the only way I will trade is if it runs fantastic. It looks like the egr box is missing the cover maybe. My biggest concern is if its the stock head but im going to look at the head code when I get there.

As long as the egr components are there that's ok. Head code is p07. Should be easy to see if it's got a header on it.

Yeah ive got the head code, engine, and ecu numbers in my phone I just hope they all match up. How bad will a different fuel rail affect mpg? Do u think the injectors will be different also? The guy im getting it from knows very little about the engine.
