neighborhood going to the tails (spotted a 2nd gen. Prius with a boattail on my road)   neighborhood going to the tails (spotted a 2nd gen. Prius with a boattail on my road)
Another boat tail project - this one is notable for its cost (about $100) and clever mounting arrangement. And it shows yet again that a proper design on the rear of a 2nd generation Toyota Prius can return a 10-12% improvement in fuel economy at highway speeds.

Getting the most out of lean burn (Honda)   Getting the most out of lean burn (Honda)
Honda engines with lean burn capability can return seriously impressive cruising fuel economy numbers. Greasemonkee has been modding his Civic VX to expand the lean burn "window" and now he's getting lean burn earlier & more often under a wider variety of conditions.

Prius 15   Prius 15's are better than aftermarket 17's! (Wrong wheels/tires can wreck your MPG)
They may look nice, but... Prius owner Wyatt was shocked to discover how much worse his fuel economy was with aftermarket wheels and tires, compared to the factory ones. Both sets had practically the same circumference, so he attributes the MPG penalty to increased aero drag and rolling resistance.

MG Midget + Geo Metro 3cyl = MGeo   MG Midget + Geo Metro 3cyl = MGeo
This ambitious fabrication project starts with a '71 MG Midget receiving a Suzuki 1.0L G10 engine (from a Geo Metro). Additional mechanical and aerodynamic mods follow, including a focus on weight reduction. The Midget is a very small and light car - stock is only 1500lbs. The goal is to get weight to ~1200 lbs and aim for super high MPG.

15 more PSI = 7% better MPG   15 more PSI = 7% better MPG
Cbaber is happy with the results of going from 30 to 45 PSI: "This tank was the first with the tires pumped up to 45 PSI. I originally had them at 30 PSI. The only thing that changed was the tire pressure, and I managed 45 MPG instead of the usual 41-42 MPG. That's about 3 MPG, or 7%."

After retiring his Civic, Bruce illustrates how a manual transmission gives a motivated eco-driver a lot more options for improving economy. He beats the EPA combined rating by over 50% on his first tank of fuel in an unmodified stick shift Accord. Add modifications on top of that, and watch the numbers climb further!

Electric Clutch Power Steering   Electric Clutch Power Steering
4ringcircus describes the project: "I have added an electric clutch to the hydraulic power steering and now can switch it on and off with the push of a button! My truck is a '97 Ford Ranger extended cab, 4x4 with the 4.0 OHV engine and manual 5 speed transmission." The results? 1 - 1.5 more MPG.

>50 mpg w/ 3/4-ton pickup   >50 mpg w/ 3/4-ton pickup
Diesel Dave describes the driving techniques plus vehicle mods that allowed him to break the 50 mpg mark (on the admittedly optimistic factory-installed MPG gauge) in his 2007 Ram 2500 Quad Cab. He adds, "A year ago I never thought this would have been possible. A year ago I was excited when I got over 30 mpg for the first time."

MetroMPG   MetroMPG's Honda Insight boat tail extension (cardboard) tuft video; ABA test +9.7%
MetroMPG used CAD (Cardboard Aided Design) to make a 'temporary' aero tail for his Insight. The project thread includes a video of tuft testing the completed tail, and an A-B-A test that showed a 9.7% improvement in fuel economy at 80 km/h (50 mph). At that speed, on a level road, the car can now achieve 110+ mpg (US).

Here's an interesting project: the award for worst drag coefficient in the e36 BMW 3-series range went to the 3-door hatchback. But AndrzejM likes the utility of the diesel BM hatch, so he's addressing the drag problem with the testing (see Kammback tuft testing video on YouTube) and construction of various other mods.

Big air dams can reduce drag... but sometimes they're just a drag! It's exceedingly rare to see an automaker going "too far" with OEM efficiency strategies, but it appears some Volt owners aren't happy with the front of their cars scraping the ground onc

bschloop has modified his Yamaha motorcycle to compete in a recent Vetter fuel economy run. He says, "I just filled up the bike today, my longest tank for mileage: 233 miles on 2.09 gallons. That comes to 111 mpg and caps a great week for fuel economy on my streamliner." Also see his build thread: 2012 Vetter Challenger Build (1981 Yamaha SR185 streamliner).
