Linner Strømlinet Vogn (Now with 3D model!) EcoModder member Sven7 shares his aerodynamic design exercise: "a production-possible four seat automobile that flaunts its aerodynamics instead of disguising them like the Prius and other contemporary hypermiler vehicles." By Sven7 - 200 replies

(Project) Boat tail-4 Door Sedan VW Mk2 (1990 Jetta GL) JethroBodine introduced his project thusly: "I started building a boat tail on my '90 VW Jetta. The plan is to use the aero templates, both versions, for a true, attached flow boat tail." In the end (pun intended), he achieves fuel economy in the high 50's (MPG) on gasoline, then swaps in a diesel engine and jumps to the high 60's. By JethroBodine - 120 replies

1990 Honda CRX Si D15Z1/HF Trans Swap Project Lots of Honda efficiency fans dream of a project like this: taking a lean-burn 1.5L engine from a Civic VX, mating it to the tall-geared transmission from a CRX HF and installing them in a nice & relatively aerodynamic CRX shell. The result can be fantastic cruising fuel economy in a package that looks great & handles well too. By 02ws6 - 42 replies

CARGaerO t'ailer; a hitch-mounted boat tail (Pontiac Vibe) Tango Charlie explains: "I've decided to make a truncated boat tail for my Vibe, mounted on the hitch-mounted cargo carrier that I made a while back. I priced some aluminum sheets at a nearby RV surplus yard and nearly gave up on the idea until I remembered that Coroplast was only $12 a sheet." By Tango Charlie - 80 replies

2011 Prius to get full boat tail w/ faired trailer The plan is to modify a small utility trailer that reduces overall aerodynamic drag below that of the car alone. The improvement must be enough to more than offset the extra weight and rolling resistance of the trailer. "It'll be fun! Maybe low 60's MPG in straight interstate highway motoring." MTSU Students Retrofit Hub Motors (Converting an Accord into a plug-in Hybrid) Here's an interesting approach to converting a front wheel drive Honda Accord into a plug-in hybrid by adding hub motors to the existing rear brake drums, plus lithium batteries and electronics in the back of the car. The inventors figure the kit doubled fuel economy, and could be commercialized for around $3000. By NeilBlanchard - 88 replies

Roof rack or trunk rack? (solution: none of the above... modded trunk!) Jakins came to EcoModder looking for advice when he saw his car's highway mileage fall by 4-5 MPG when carrying BMX bikes in the trunk forced the trunk lid to remain part-way open. He came up with a creative solution with an angle grinder and a junk trunk lid that lets him close it while still fitting 4 (!) bikes in back. By Jakins - 48 replies

10-15% reduced consumption after "engine split" (physically deactivating 2 of 4 cyl.) When a bearing went in this Fiat's worn out engine, JohnAh tried something that many have thought about but few have attempted: for fun, he implemented his own "variable displacement" modification ... by physically removing two pistons! "To my big surprise and happiness, not only did the engine start and run, it kept on running for over 40,000 more kilometers." This thread includes a video of the car in action.
