Yeah, this is part of where I was going. The farther I can move the airdam back, the more practical it would be for day-to-day use. I was thinking of re-using my spring-mounted grill block as a freeway-only air dam :



The sides would be fixed and still vulnerable, but at least I would be reducing my *overall* vulnerability (right?!?!?!?!?). Here's what I think it would look like from the bottom (the side parts are in white) :
