Your biggest gains will be made by "tightening the nut behind the wheel" as is often said around here. Click on the "100+ Hypermiling Tips" link above. You won't use all of them, but they will get you thinking along the lines of how you need to operate a car to be the most efficient.
The second thing to do is to get a Scangauge II. It'll work in your Mustang, since it is OBD-II, (but not the Probe, due to it being pre-OBD-II). The Scangauge will quickly teach you how to drive more efficiently with its instantaneous feedback.
