Correct, you don't need to know how the code works, all you need to know is how to calibrate the values for your car, and it's very easy to do that.

I went with the iDuino homemade version first, but it ended up being a really sloppy soldering job, and just turned into a big mess. I then bought the spiffie.org kit, and everything came together really nicely. If you really want to build it yourself, then I would recommend the kit - getting all the parts on your own can result in a unit that's hard to debug if it doesn't work right, because you might not be using the exact same parts that everyone else has. If it's backordered, email them, they usually know about when they will be coming back.

Of course the preassembled version really makes the most sense right now, you don't have to worry about installing diodes backwards, or anything like that.
