EA81 or EA82? In my experience with EA81s, the Hitachi was the better carb (vs. Carter-Solex). Aside from the general questions: does the car run alright (aside from rich), how's the O2 sensor, vacuum hoses all intact, EGR and PCV OK? Could be the carb is stuck in cold-start mode. There's a solenoid that allows more air in after the car's warm. I don't remember the particulars about it as I haven't had one of these in 12 years (though I'd love to find an '84 hardtop 5 speed, as rust-free as realistically possible) and never an issue with the carb anyway. Don't know what they did with EA82's.
