the TDI is a good example of economy, i've read that it travelled a huge distance with a very small amount of diesel, at high speeds. The other one(DTM like) doesn't has to do with fuel economy, its aerodynamic is used to downforce, not FE. Also it might not be a body with functional doors, just a "bubble"(is that what its called?), making it easy to have a full smooth surface, no doors, no handles, no gaps...
