You might be right about that. Personally, my tires' "max" tire pressure is only 40 psi, which is only about 5-6 psi over the recommended pressure. I don't know how much additional MPG that gets me, but I do seem to be able to coast longer than before. And I don't think I'll have too many of the problems you described. I can't imagine running 50+ psi like some folks do, but I think the game here is the combined effects of many small modifications that can add up to a significant difference.
