...if you draw on "quadrille" (1/4-inch grid-lines) paper, you can simply do the "rise-over-run" relationshipt (at one of the four corners of the sheet of paper) to get a "visual" indication of the slope; ie: SLOPE = RISE(Y-axis)/RUN(X-axis)

...so your 4:1, would be: SLOPE = 1(RISE)/4(RUN) = 0.25
