I think most of the bad reputation comes from manufacturers using them on cars that are too heavy for the sidewall. My subaru came with the stock and they were awful. The squealed around every corner, even when slowly turning into parking lots. The outside edges completely wore down in the first 12,000 miles. I ran them at about 32 psi. The thing is, my subaru weighs 3280 lbs.
My previous car, a 2000 celica, had re92s stock as well. No problems, no issues, no squealing, no sidewall wear. Got 40,000+ miles out of them(and 38mpg). It only weighed 2400 lbs. I think the tire really is great for light weight cars.
