Of the motive source he referred to "a mysterious radiation, which comes out of the aether". The small device very obviously and effectively appropriated this energy. Tesla also spoke very glowingly of this providence, saying of the energy itself that "it is available in limitless quantities".

That sounds a tremendous amount like the 20th Century Motor Company's motor form
Atlas Shrugged...

John Galt invented a new type of electrical apparatus described in the book as a motor. However, it does not operate like a motor in the common use of the word today: it is capable of harnessing static electricity and transforming it into useful mechanical work. Its operation is reminiscent of modern speculation about zero-point energy.
Dagny discovers a discarded prototype of the motor and it is superficially described in section Part 1, Chapter 9. Galt shows Dagny the motor and describes it in section Part 3, Chapter 1.
You seem to be describing exactly that. The only problem with it was if it was limitless energy, you would not be able to capitalize on it, therefore it would be shutdown in an instant. What happened to Tesla? I am not familiar with his story. What is the name of the book?
