The speedomoter on my car (92 CX) stopped working twice. The first time it (the speedo needle was totally dead) was a bad connector on the sending unit on the transmission. Some contact cleaner sprayed into the opened connector fixed that problem 180,000 miles ago. The 2nd failure (the speedo needle would respond to speed changes, but was spending most of its time at 6 o'clock on the speedo dial) it was a cracked solder joint at the base of the one of the long connector pins that attach the front display part of the speedo unit to the back circuit board. Reheating the solder joint fixed that problem about 100,000 miles ago.
