I was just thinking about this last week. I am now averaging ~55 mpg tanks on my work commute (last 13 tanks with 8 over 55 mpg). I was shooting for 60 mpg and came close but that was an excellent week of little traffic.
I concluded that at the price of under $3.00/gallon, anything over 50 mpg would make me happy. I can do some hypermiling but do not have to get drastic to achieve 50 mpg. Once it crests $3.00/gallon I will not be happy with anything under 55 mpg and striving earnestly for tanks averaging over 60 mpg. I know that is possible, it is just a matter of how slow I dare to drive with Raleigh area traffic.
