Yah, 4x4 + house + mpg might be one of those "pick any two" deals.
One other option, though may be a little cramped for full time homeage, put a tdi engine and a camper top/stove/etc in a vw syncro if 4x4 is a must have (or just by a gas syncro camper and leave it):
