My quick definition is most engines run as lean as 14.7:1 air/fuel at light load or cruise speed. Some manufacturers developed a engine that could run as lean as 22:1 air/fuel. This was done with changes made to the induction system, egr, O2 sensor, cat and ecu.

With these engines running at 22:1 air/fuel their still making the same power to the wheels that other cars make at 14.7:1 air/fuel. But they are using a lot less fuel to do it.

On my setup I changed the combustion chamber design to run as lean as 24:1air/fuel on a conventional engine(none lean burn engine) I'm using a after market EFI system, after market intake manifold, turbo, Suzuki pistons and Eagle rods to make this work. But my engine is still not considered a lean burn engine. It just runs leaner. But I keep referring to mine as lean burn based on the air fuel it runs at. So I guess I need to call it something else.
