if it wasn't the gas .. the only other reason it would be pinging is sometimes the engine is cold
premium is also much cleaner and on a carburated bike.. that means taking care of the bike much less, cleaning the jets less, and make the spark plugs and valves last just that little bit longer

Premium fuel is not universally cleaner, certain brands add the same detergents to all the grades they sell, so there's no difference in how "clean" the fuels are.
And the Ninja 250 is designed to run on 87. That being said, I've never driven my Ninja for economy, though that is going to change here soon, as the Burgman has a lot of issues that are going to require grounding to correct. I don't doubt that the engine will ping at WOT at low revs, and IIRC, Bryan is tuned a little on the lean side, which makes it easier to ping regardless of the grade.
