Over here it is classed as a car we do not call 4x4s SUVs like you do nor do we
have mini vans they are still called cars or people carriers or MPV but they are still all classed as cars. Car is a generic name it would also not be that odd if someone had a van and they said 'i got in the car'
Auto makers could never make a car that is safe if hit by an HGV so they don't bother
and that is why we have speed restrictions and lane restrictions on all HGVs over here. HGVs also stick to main roads were it is safer.
