When you say that the '96 + cars were considerably cleaner, you are talking about the emissions right ?
I think my '93 is rated as a Tier II and the '96 + cars were rated as an LEV.
That's a good reason to not go for the older model, yet with the older car getting higher MPG, where do the two cars match each other in emissions output ?
Regarding the older car not being able to use a ScanGuage ( Not OBD2 ) , I use something very similar called a SuperMID. Other users on this site with the same car use the open source MPGuinio ( did I spell that right guys ?)
