Top-swapping an L36 is doable but takes lots of $$$ and lots of time tuning. The folks who have done it spend about $2000 or more in parts and tuning software.
Check which gears you have. If you have the 2.86 final drive, that's the lowest you can get factory. If you have the 3.06 gears, finding a 2.86-geared transmission may be worth the time and effort.

Well, I don't have either, now... My father has the Grand Prix, if the transmission ever goes out, we're going to 5 speed swap it. (Cavalier)
If I can't get my Wife's non-GM product fixed, we're going to have to push back swapping the tranny in Cara, as well.
