Both Hudson and Nash (which merged in, I think, 1954) had "enclosed wheels" as a styling/engineering feature in the late 40's/early 50's. The Metropolian was the last car they sold with sich a feature. Frank, you're right that they weren't detachable skirts, and both manufacturers used a much narrower front track so that they could have a decent steering radius. And, yes, the Metro didn't have totally enclosed front wheel wells, but the early 50's Nash Ambassador certainly did. And it could be a pain to change a tire under adverse circumstances! You had to jack those puppies up!
