Personally I think it's not a very sensible mod considering a conventional hydraulic PS system is a "pressure demand" design where losses are minimized as there is no significant pressure developed other than when it's needed.

But if you do it, just remove the vanes leaving the hoses connected and the system filled to the normal level.
