Driving in the Rain

The other day I was driving in the rain on a 4 lane road and noticed the rain was hard enough to maintain a thin layer or water except in the tracks of the vehicle ahead of me.

Maintaining a 2 second distance I found I could stay in the relatively bare tracks. This improves the vision of drivers behind me and reduces the chance of hydroplaning. Does anyone have any knowledge or guesses on gas saved by driving like this?
