Look at anyone in the UK with a "Rover V8" as it is essentially the same engine as the Buick. Rover 3500 (SD1) drivers have reported around 15 MPG around town and roughly 20-25 on a journey - these are Imperial gallon of course.

I have a personal lust for a Rover P5B (B=Buick=V8) coupe. It wouldn't get much coverage here (ecomodder) of course (probably struggle to 20mpg) but I love the shape. I read an article about the P5B development which described the purchase of the engine by Rover. As part of the deal a retired Buick engineer agreed to assist with changing the engine to rev to 6000 RPM. He asked why, so they took him for a trip down the M1 motorway in a P5 at 100-110. The rest, as they say, is history.

An older Range Rover or Discovery V8 has the same engine. I have a desire to put a VW V6 TDi in a P5B at some point, and a 3.5 V8 into my older MGB GT.

It went from 3.5 Litres to 4.6 (no idea about cu-inch) before BMW replaced it.

EDIT : The rover version got twin SU carbs which are super-efficient.
