I was actually thinking that I'll get the machinist to bolt that hub back onto the output shaft and put the shaft in the lathe chuck to double-check the work. (He can lop the shaft off where needed to fit - it's being sacrificed to get the 2nd gearset off it anyway.)
EDIT: Hey - perhaps I should bring it to machinist friend #1 for quality control....

Second opinion never hurts, unless it bothers 1st opinion's ego... but then, if that's the case, you probably don't want that guy's fingers in your parts anyway.
