The Escort steel wheels these were put on had a certain amount of rust and roughness...decided not to try sanding...since my one experience trying this was not good. I just clean them up using a dish washing scrubber and use NAPAs blue goo when mounting. If I have a bead leak...I can mark the place...break the bead and apply some non hardening gasket goop to that area.

Some use axle grease if they have problems...but if you ever have a tire spin on the rim...you are SOL.
