According to the
ACT history, the company was founded in 1959, so it likely didn't have much impact nationally by 1960 when I was a HS Jr taking the SAT. IIRC, I scored about 1250. As Andrew says, college admission is more than test scores. Ditto for college success and success in life.
My 1250 SAT got me admitted to the best public university in the state (UC Berkeley). When I got there, they held a Freshman class meeting in a large lecture hall. They told us to look around us at our neighbors. Three out of four of us would not be there in four years, they warned. They would flunk out, drop out, and transfer. It was true. Two others from my high school, and a friend from my neighborhood, all dropped out within a year. Another freshman in my co-op sharing our door (2 doubles and a single) flunked out the first year.
I trudged along, graduating from UCB at age 20. Life was harder than school. If you're lucky, you'll dodge the potholes and disasters lurking to trip you up, and do well in life. Ambition and hard work will take you so far, and enable you to get up again after you've been kneecapped. But everyone who does well should remember the words to the old folk song, "There but for Fortune."
