Electro-hydraulic valve actuation. It allows almost any intake valve schedule you want, giving good torque down low and power up high.

BMW was playing with the idea a while back, and they made a gas engine that didn't need a throttle plate, because it can use the intake valves to modulate power. BMW's valvetrain doesn't appear to have made it to market.

It's a good idea, if it can be made reliable and inexpensive enough. I hope it catches on.
