Some useful although sometimes confusing
transmission codes for the Metro
Keep in mind that there are US/Japanese/other destination models for the many badges and years of the Metro or Metro related cars so there is
no set rule like all 4cyl 5speeds in 1999 were final drive ratios of 3.95:1 (<-------I didn't make this example accurate)
From what I've been told and briefly read there are
at least six final drive ratios ranging from 3.52, 3.61 (Automatic), 3.79, 3.95, 4.10 (Automatic) and the 4.39:1
The lower the number the taller the gear. The teeth for the tallest gear (preferred for economy and not a good hill climber) counts 72 and the shorter gear (preferred for fast acceleration with higher rpms) has 79 teeth but I haven't verified this tooth count to be absolute, it's basically true but this is an unorganized and impromptu post and has obvious holes in it. I think the 3.95 is the 79 tooth but don't know the tooth count of the 5th gear for the 4.39 FD so any research on your part would be greatly appreciated and I would gladly edit my post to make it more accurate.
I would like to see a data base of:
Make....Model....Year....Engine...Manual/Auto...F. D. Ratio....GVWR....Tire Size
for the Geo Metro. With this information we could pick our transmissions from junk yards much faster, cross reference parts, and be overall better informed. The 3.52 fd ratio is not from the XFi which has a 3.79:1 ratio; it's from another model the 1989-94 SOHC 1.3L Swift hatchbacks and maybe others.
I hope this helps.
What do you think about a data base for Geo's?
