Also when I took my drivers test years ago, they told me never to coast in neutral, but instead to simply use the clutch, apparently they felt it was safer.
In an emergency situation when you need to accelerate, it's quicker to just let out the clutch and put your foot in it. Putting the car in gear takes an extra fraction of a second, which can make a difference, also it's another thought process you have to do while panicking, another thing that can go wrong. OTOH, most hypermilers aren't going to be in a gear where they can accelerate quickly anyway (5th @ 30) so you're still going to have to shift gears.
