Neil -

I was thinking that if I were to do something like this, it would be replacement of all three mirrors with a roof-mounted camera just a few inches further up from the rear window with a large (possibly 9 inch diagonally) monitor mounted to the ceiling.

I believe this would afford an optimal view of the entire area behind the driver and to both sides, excepting those areas that a simple shoulder check could be used, and excluding periphery.
