I recommend the MPGuino. They are fairly easy to install (it took me about 1 hour) and can be very accurate. With a little work you can get the RPMs displayed with whatever else you find useful. There is an online community here at EcoModder that is dedicated to this, and answers questions and provides help. You can even get one for a donation of $55. Contact member dcb for details.
A tachometer is nice, and a vacuum guage is nice, but neither really tell you what your MPG is doing, for that you need instantaneous feedback, and for many of us, MPGuino is the best/easiest way.
