Series hybrid - range extender engine

proActive Issue 34

Lotus has decided to offer a range extender for series hybrid vehicles. Take an ordinary EV and install their 35 kW generator set to provide recharge when a series hybrid needs more range:
  • gasoline engine - they didn't choose diesel and the article explains why
  • 35 kW - certainly enough for sustained cruise for a Prius sized vehicle
The rest of the engine technology doesn't inspire but it doesn't have to. A single speed engine, it can be optimized for one task and avoid a lot of problems.
