Older diesel VW's are a good choice too, pretty much anything diesel with surpass the gas "brother" in MPGs.

So what about a 2.5L V6, which would have more torque at lower RPM than a 2.5L I4? Allowing for more loading and lower RPMs during short shifting, making acceleration more efficient... (Chrysler has both.)
