What works for me is keeping top speeds to 55-60 mph cruising, shifting at 2000 rpm in all gears except top gear, moderate acceleration (taping that imaginary egg to your gas pedal or shoe), and anticipating stoplights/stop signs and traffic slow-ups so you don't use your brakes.
