For new batteries, it looks like lead is dead. EV components is offering the newer TS cells for about $390/kWh plus tax and shipping (if you live in the state and don't do local pickup), which is pretty much the same price per usable (Peukert's) kWh that lead offers, at about a third of the weight and supposedly ten times the lifespan. For a beer budget lead conversion, finding used lead is still probably cheaper up front, hopefully free, but in terms of new batteries, w/ the cost per kWh stored it's pretty hard to beat the cheap LFP cells from China.
