Grinding is normal if you try to shift in to reverse without stopping, burning the clutch is not normal, the only time I've smelled a burning clutch was while trying to teach someone how to do a hill start, half an hour on a hill stalling the car and slipping the clutch and even after that it was not bad, really faint.
