It is currently serving as collision protection.

Ben mentioned about someone else's phev setup using some air shocks to maintain usability of the spare tire. I really like this idea. Since it is the wife's car (and she is capable of changing a tire), I'd like to have the utility of it. We'll figure that out once we get things working though.
