Just a thought but you may want to have some 'head room' on the NiMH pack to handle modest regeneration. Normally, the car will seek a 60% SOC on the main traction battery with a maximum of 80% SOC. The 20% gap provides 'head room' for regenerative energy ... important if in a hilly or mountainous area. By maintaining a 70% SOC, you've only got 10% for energy capture. ... Just a caution.
