I'm personally adverse to going alternator less. The alternator's themselves are only 60% efficient or so. I'd take a higher efficiency model over going without one.

I had problems with my alternator not charging due to the belt tensioner. I could jump it and it'd run for 10 mins before sputtering and losing dash lights regardless of how long the jumper cables had been hooked up. Letting an Auto battery get too low is a quick way to ruin the battery.
