Hmmm. I don't know unless they don't want you to run the fuel level to low. From the manual:

NOTE: It is dangerous to run a vehicle out of fuel and can damage the
fuel pump. Do not rely on the fuel gauge or ScanGaugeII at low fuel
levels or low remaining distance or time.
It also states:

When the tank is around 1/4 full, go to the gas station (the same one if
possible and use the same pump with the vehicle facing the same
direction) and fill up the tank at the same rate and let it shut off
automatically.
So it appears that I did it wrong. My SG was within .1 gallon just about every fill. My guess is they don't want you running it to low for the reasons above. Maybe someone else can come up with a better explanation.
