I am going to disagree with your Grandpa. The ONLY thing that didn't work on my '95 Cummins with the computer unplugged was the OD. It's totally computer controlled.

That being said, there could be many reasons why it didn't work. First off, does it HAVE OD? My buddy has a late 90's Stratus 4 cyc and it's just a 3 sp auto, no OD. I couldn't imagine them putting MORE gears in a lighter / smaller car.
